Huddled on the hard floor, in the silent darkness, I try not to be afraid. But my mind roves in fearful circles. Always I come back to the fact that I managed, beyond comprehension, to further enrage a prince already angry enough to be called The Beast.

And beneath those thoughts, the idea it is all a dream, a senseless nightmare, born of my own craziness, comes back to haunt me. It is hard to think straight in such darkness.

Just as I am patting the hard floor with the palms of my hands to assure myself I’m real, light floods my vision.

I blink. My surroundings come into focus. There are no windows. Big surprise. No furniture. There is nothing except bars. I sit in some kind of jail cell.

Standing up on wobbly legs, I hear heavy footsteps.

It’s him.

The Beast. In a tux.

When he stands in the doorway, I avert my eyes, gazing down at the floor. My whole body quakes in his presence.

“Hello, Bel,” he says, in a neutral voice.

I cannot bring myself to look at him.

“I must apologize for my lack of manners. Come. And let me make amends.”

He turns, beckoning me to follow, but I stumble, suddenly dizzy.

My limbs are made of rubber. I’m so weak. I have no idea how long it has been since I’ve eaten.

The floor tilts as I try to go through the door.

Grabbing onto one of the bars, I close my eyes, trying to force down nausea. But bile rises in my throat. Heaves wrack my body.

It is too much. I have reached my breaking point. I lower myself to the floor. A sob wrenches from my throat. Tears spill from eyes.

I hear him approach. Sorrow wafts over me. It comes from him.

I’m surprised. I had expected anger.

“Dear God, forgive me,” he says. And once again, he lifts me into his arms.

I lay my aching head in the crook of his neck.

What seems only seconds later, he is laying me down, covering me with a blanket. “You must rest,” he says.
